Guilford College Observatory Open House March 10
The Physics Department of Guilford College will host an observatory open house in the Frank Family Science Center at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 10.

Associate Professor Don Smith will make a multimedia planetarium presentation on comets, asteroids and meteors in Joseph M. Bryan Jr. Auditorium, followed (weather permitting) by telescope viewing on the roof at the J. Donald Cline Observatory.

Comets, asteroids and meteors have made headlines recently. A meteor exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia, on Feb. 15. Only 16 hours later, the unrelated asteroid DA14 zipped by the Earth, inside the orbits of some of our satellites.

Who are these dangerous visitors? Where do they come from? And why are they so destructive? Sunday’s program will provide answers.

The comet PANSTARRS will be visible in the Northern Hemisphere beginning March 7, splashing a tail across the Western sky just after sunset. It might be possible to see PANSTARRS on Sunday. Later this year, ISON might become the most dramatic comet in decades.
